Saw this today in "General Treatment Strategies"
      #19447 - 07/18/01 08:23 PM

Hi All,
I saw this today in the "General Treatment Strategies" postings here at The Body. You can read the physician's posting to Dr. Cohen, it's dated July 18. I included the internet link to this may call for some lobbying. This was news to me, don't know if others are already aware or how hopeful/helpful this is or may be.
Best of luck and health to all.

This is more garbage. He's "cured" two people in ghana??What's their status today? Has he done any clinical trials? I'm sure he can get thousands of Africans to take his so called cure. Has he tried? Sounds like he's just trying to get publicity for his company....THERE IS NO CURE! NO ONE is trying to STOP THE CURE! THERE IS NO EVIL EMPIRE! Doctors want to help patients, for god's sake there are many doctors with HIV! Don't you think they want the CURE!!!!! Use common sense girl! THis doctor is involved with a company that wants to make money! He's not giving anything out for free! He needs to to controlled studies and I'm sure he can do that freely in AFRICA or ASIA! But he's not.

GARBAGE? Perhaps you should do some research before ragging on Amy. Dr. Davis did start a clinical trial, approved by the FDA, and all of a sudden the FDA stopped it for no reason and has not as yet let him start up a new one.
The drug companies are only fired up by big dollars, they really don't give a [censored] if they find a cure or not, where the hell have you been?

Here is a letter I recieved from Jules Levin of NATAP - Reprinted with his permission.

HIV New Drug Research Is Being Cut Back

It appears as though a major AIDS drug manufacturer is cutting back on their
committment to HIV. There are rumors that 2 or 3 other major companies are
considering cutting back on their committments. Several drug companies have
been questioning their committment to HIV research & development. It appears
that this is directly tied to their concerns about their profits and patents
being eroded due to developments regarding supplying HIV drugs in the
developing world. We all are concerned about HIV in the developing world and
would like therapies and infrastructure to be provided. However, certain
individuals and organizations have taken it upon themselves to represent the
interests of people infected with HIV in this debate. The tone and substance
of the debates on this issue has scared top drug company officials about
staying in HIV when they can make more money in other diseases. If future
research of new HIV treatments is hampered this hurts people with HIV and
everyone else. Negotiations to provide HIV drugs and infrastructure for
treatment in the developing world have not been conducted properly.
Negotiations with the drug industry should strike a balance protecting people
with HIV here in the US and the developed world, but it appears this has been
neglected. Activists conducting these negotiations never consulted with the
broad community of people with HIV in the developed world. This sort of thing
has occurred on a number of other issues. And often we have to step forward
to fix their mistakes. Many of these activists do not appear to have
adequately considered the interests of people with HIV in the developed
world. Many of them are just anti-establishment, anti-corporation, but they
fail to consider that it is these corporations that drive drug research and
it is the profit incentive that drives them. Russia does not produce HIV
medications, capitalist society does.

These activists have repeatedly said the drug companies make so much money in
HIV that they would never leave HIV. Some activists have even said the
companies will make money on supplying drugs in the developing world. The
drug companies are concerned that their profits will be eroded. They are
concerned that European and US authorities and activists will ask for and get
price reductions for HIV medications here in the US and in Europe. Already,
some US activists who demanded drugs for Africa publicly have demanded the
drug companies reduce US prices. This will serve as disincentive staying in
HIV research. The problem, that activists fail to grasp, is that to a large
degree research & development of drugs in any disease is driven by profits.
Wall street requires a certain amount of profit increases every quarter for a
company's stock to perform well in the market. This is the main concern for a
company borad of directors and for the CEO. If the CEO doesn't produce
adequate profits he may lose his job due to his obligation to the Board of
Directors and the stockholders. Cutting back on HIV by a company may not
occur with a loud announcement because they are concerned about being
criticized. So, it will be slowly and very subtly be implemented so many
people may not even know what's going on. Sure, some drug company executive
are interested in helping with finding HIV treatments but they are at least
equally concerned with Wall Street, their stock price, their Board of
Directors, and their bottom line.

Do not stand idly by anymore, as we have until now. It is time for people
with HIV to stand up for themselves. Do not let loud self-appointed activists
negotiate your life away and speak for us. I urge you to step forward and be
heard. We need to carve out a position for ourselves in this debate. Please
email me back and we can join together in discussing next steps. It may be
too late to prevent the one drug company from limiting their committment to
HIV but maybe we can stem the tide. What these activists fail to realize is
that by limiting new research the cure may never be found, that preventative
vaccine that is most needed for the developing world may never be found. Not
to mention the cure for people with HIV in the developing world.

In this instance research into future HIV drugs and treatment may have been
placed in some jeopardy. A major HIV drug company is planning to cut back on
their committment to HIV research and several others may have somewhat
tenuous committments. We want HIV treatment & infrastructure for all but at
what cost.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Jules Levin

all this discussion about a so called "cure" is pure bullshit.

if a cure would have been found it would probebly hyped and TESTED ultra fast and would have made alot of money.
those company officals know what their doing, if they saw good results from their researchers they would have invested more.

Well, if it isn't a cure why doesn't the FDA just allow the clinical's not like it's going to take any money away from the drug companies........right?

You have to actually have something valid to test before the FDA will allow testing. For example, just because a doctor may believe that aloe vera (or someother substance) applied to the genitals every night will cure HIV doesn't mean the FDA will allow testing. And just because Dr. Whatzit in the above letter says those things doesn't mean it is true.
