Hey ya'll! My friend, David, is going to start Pegasys to treat his Hep B this week. I have read some scary stuff about the side effects. has anyone got any experience to share or any advice about handling it? Thanks, Shannon

Yes, I used Pegasys and ribavirin 3 years ago to treat hep C. The entire treatment lasted a year. The first 3 months were pretty miserable, but things improved. Had no energy, was very depressed, and pretty out of it. The good thing was that I cleared the virus!

Not to be too technical, but Pegasys does not "clear" Hep B or C, it lowers the amount of the virus below detectable levels, much as HIV meds do. The virus is and will continue to be in your body, requiring regular testing for the remainder of your life.

The interesting thing is that the semantics have been changing rapidly regarding Hep. C treatment. When I first started, they were using SVR (sustained viral response). Within a year, the common term for SVR became "clearing". In the last year, many Hep C specialists are using "cure". Follow up studies are still gathering data as to long term SVR, clearing, or cure. Hep C research is about 15 years behind HIV, but with the HIV model, they are catching up fast.

I agree that cure is wrong, the hepatitis may be cured with lower viral levels but the C virus is not cleared in any sense of the word. Such a thing was never achieved even with the polio virus 60 years ago. The virus remains in the body, undetectable, but there none the less.

What is the point, dear? Are you the Pegasys salesman, or what? I have always suspected the drug companies that sponsor this board of planting shills labeled as "Anonymous" posters. So sweet-ums, which are you?
