Hi, I'm new to this board and wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself.
My name is Shari and I am not infected with HIV, (this by shear luck only). I AM infected with Hepatitis C and the virus has caused severe damage to my liver.
Over 5 million Americans in this country are infected with the Hepatitis C virus. Only 20-30% are aware of their infection status. HCV is the number one reason in this country for liver transplants. The demand for organs and the ratio of available donor organs are sadly not nearly sufficient.
Over 300,000 (and I personally believe this figure is way outdated) are coinfected HIV/HCV. The leading cause of death with people with AIDS is liver related.
The Hepatitis C community can learn much from AIDs advocates and activists, but more important, we need to join forces to effectively make the general public aware of this epidemic.
Thank you for letting me go on and on. Maybe we can start a thread about Hepatitis C?
For those of you who live in the New York Tri-State Area, I'm including info about an awareness march on May 18th.

Shari, thanks for your post. My best friend at work and the only person I've shared my HIV status with found out last month that she was infected with Hep C. Luckily for her, no HIV. they estimate she has had it for 30 years and got it from a blood transfusion in the late 80s. She has had minor ongoing health problems for years but no one thought to test for Hep C. Some of the issues they face are similar to what HIVers face. Yet it seems like there is much less support for them and fewer options in many cases. My friend has become a champion for getting tested for Hep C and becasue of her about 1/2 of the adults in our school have gotten tested. The statistics you quote are scary and I think so true. Hep C and HIV testing should be readily available for all and there should be a process to encourage individuals to get tested. We have to get past the stigma of these diseases or else they will contnue to spread becuase of fear of testing. They say the bulk of new HIV cases come as a result of individuals who are poz and don't know it. I'm sure the same can be said of Hep C.
Thanks again for the post.
