HIV and drinking
      #187979 - 04/26/06 01:09 AM

I am so depressed and am drinking large amounts of alcohol. I am at wits end and also have severe back pain.
Is it true that alcohol speeds HIV to AIDS??

Is that what you want, dear, to have AIDS? You seem bent on self destruction, so if you want to kill yourself drink on. It will destroy your liver which will allow the HIV meds to wreck further havoc on your liver once you start taking the meds.

Your choice friend, live or die?

Dont want to diagnose you,,....but I understand "back pain" can be your kidneys. Depends on where the pain is. YOU need to get a grip on whats bothering you and deal with it.

Alcohol in and of itself will not accelerate the virus, but it certainly will damage your overall health if you continue to drink in heavy quantities. It definitely will impact your liver (which could be part of your back pain), it's hard on the kidneys (also could be part of the back pain), and if kept up for too long, probably would suppress your immune system as well (which would making fighting HIV more difficult).

As others have mentioned, it's probably a wise idea for you to assess what is making you drink so heavily and solve that issue; otherwise, yes, you're heading into a downward spiral...a spiral that may be difficult from which to recover...and one that won't kill you quickly either (in fact, you'll likely be a painful mess for years). It's not clear to me if your goal is self destruction, or if you're merely asking a question about whether or not alcohol will accelerate HIV.

Why not seek out some help and solve the situation and live a happier life? You can do so and still be poz. I'm poz, and I honestly have to say my life is better than it was when I was neg. I've learned more about myself and what's important in life and have gone after the goals that mean the most to me.

If I can help just ask... Ive been in recovery now for 10 years from alcohol. I would hihgly recomend you STOP with the help of AA. Your liver function is dramatically hindered by the use of alcohol. If you are on meds, meds tend to push the limits of your liver as well as you kidneys and you will open up a hole nother can of worms.. HIV/AIDS + ALCOHOL will really make a mess of things.
