Treatment Breaks Increase AIDS Complications

By Research + Treatment News
Until more research is available to show who can safely take treatment breaks, researchers advise all HIVers to avoid treatment interruptions and change to better-tolerated antiretrovirals if they’re having problems adhering to prescribed regimens. Researchers reached the conclusion after having to halt the Strategies for Management of Antiretroviral Therapy trial, launched in 2003 in 33 nations, when early trial data showed drug breaks doubled participants’ 1.5% incidence rate of AIDS-related complications to 3% per year.9.

I've had a couple. Sometimes you need the mental lift from not taking medication. I was monitored by my doctor and last time managed to stay off medicaton for almost 2 years. I'm back on it now and my numbers have gone right back to where they were before my holiday. I'm thinking about taking another one before too long.

Holidays might not be for everyone, but it's something to be discussed with your doctor.

I recently had a holiday that lasted nearly 2 years as well. The holiday came at a time where my numbers were really good, and I was on a light regime to start with. I was going through a hard time having to nurse my husband who was not getting any better, and doc felt the stress of dealing with my husband, raising a child and the drug regime would have been too much, so he wanted to give me less to worry about.

About two months after my husband passed, I started back up again on meds, and my numbers are back up to where they were before my holiday or even better than. Though, I won't consider taking additional holidays. I hate the thought of letting that virus running rampant through my body without anything to fight it.

You know, it wasnt really a failed attempt if it , in fact, proved that drug holidays are NOT GOOD. Now we know its not advisable to have scheduled drug holidays.
