Just got back from the clinic with my friend so he could get a course of PEP pills. He has to take 12 pills a day for the next 4 weeks with possible side effects ( sorry for all you guys out there who are on meds) he runs a pub and his job has long hours so they could effect his work. I know taking the pills is better than the alternative but i really wasn't ready for such a reality shock, and i know i shouldn't but i feel guilty. Is this what it's going to be like from now on?

Benders... In answer to your question.. Is this going to be this way from now on? Well I dont like the alternative, and if its taking a few pills once daily keeps you alive.. Well its just how you want to look at it I guess. Dont look at it as a negative. Many people with other allments would love to have this kind of treatment options...
Love

And PEP is short for? Is this some prophylactic course of treatment that UK doctors are using now for people who may have been exposed, but whose tests are indeterminate?
I was never on meds when I lived over there, so I may not be up on the lingo.
A pub in Manchester, a gay pub in Manchester, and what name does the pub go by? I would love to drop by next time I'm over.
Cheers,
ScotCharles

Post exposure Prophylaxis, the hiv morining after. Yeah the pubs in manchester but it's not a gay pub although manchesters not short of them. I'd love to tell you all about it but he might not like the idea of me telling people what goes on with us online :(. xx

Oh, of course. I did a consult job for a bank in Knutsford, not too far from you. The Manchester pubs at the weekend kept me sane, Knutsford is a bit, well......
Sorry about your HIV status. I've been positive for 21 years, and even now I occassionally get my fill of the damnable thing. Feel free to gripe and groan in this forum, we all do it, now and then.
Cheers,
ScotCharles

As Benders staed, PEP is known as the HIV morning after. It is becoming more widely available, but isn't available to everyone and it certainly isn't a panacea. It was first only offered to those who had occupational exposure, but more recently has become available in non-occupational settings. The efficacy is not entirely known (although most say it is 80 to 90 percent effective, if not more).
It is still hard to get. Many doctors don't know about it or are ignorant about HIV in general. In the US high risk people can get it in the big urban areas at the various clinics and hospital, and in Canada it is available via the emergency wards in urban areas for occupational exposures and rape cases. A doctor will typically give you a five day course and the CDC will decide if you need a further 25 day course based on your risk thereafter.
Usually the dosage tends to be stronger than the normal cocktail, since you are trying to kill the HIV before it spreads in the body. Consequently, there tend to be numerous side effects and many people are unable to complete the whole course.
PEP doesn't delay seroconversion or anything like that. It either works or it doesn't. And, to be effective, it needs to be administered within hours of exposure (no more than 36 hours, and ideally within 24 hours).
