disclosing and job applications
      #177461 - 02/27/06 03:48 PM

hi everyone~

what do y'all think about disclosing your HIV status in one's cover letter for a job? i am looking at jobs in the non profit sector that work at least partially the HIV/AIDS community. some say "people living with HIV/AIDS encouraged to apply", "please indicate your personal experience with HIV/AIDS", "please indicate why your background is a good fit for this position" - this last for a legal org that works with many different issues including HIV.

to be honest even though a lot of folks in my life know my HIV status and even though i volunteer with a lot of AIDS orgs, i am still learning how to live with this and it makes me a little nervous to put in writing (in my first communication) to some person/people i don't know that i am HIV positive, especially if i never hear from them and they have my name and cover letter on file...

however, in some sense it counts as a qualification

any suggestions on how to handle this?

thanks and blessings everyone...

Im still alittle shy about telling people,
but Im getting better most of my teachers know and Im a psycholgy major and plan to specialize in HIV/AIDS mental health and I plan to be very open on that front because I believe when someone with HIV has problems they would rather talk to another poz then someone who has no Idea where their coming from.
so to answer your question I would,
good luck on the job hon
lets us know how it goes

take care and be sooooo safe love,

i personally would... if it was something my job is involved with. i as a consumer would be THRILLED to know that someone that was assisting me was indeed HIV+, they could understand where i'm coming from. also, with the employer knowing your status, you really wouldn't have to explain too much every 12 weeks when you tell them you have ANOOOOOTHER dr appt, ad then another one right after. that's my biggest hurdle. having them look at me like i'm actually just crazy & going to see my shrink! LMAO! i have to make sure the Dr notes are blank-ish at the top because the name of the practice is "INFECTIOUS DISEASE PRACTICE & SPECIALIST" Dr's blah blah blah blah balh. greeeeeeeat. can ya get me another one without sooo much info on there. thanks.

I don't live in a small community, and I'm still leary of telling people, especially those I work with, my status. I did that once. Told a company I was working with, and well, they found a reason for not needing me.

My daughter once told the mother of her friend once, who is an intelligent person. Let's just say that the kids could almost not play together, and my daughter is NEGATIVE. The mom was so worried that if her daughter came over to my house that she would contract it. The girl stopped coming to our house, but my daughter was allowed to go to theirs.

I have also had "friends" that I've told, only for them to stop calling me or returning phone calls.

So, I'm VERY selective with whom I tell. The company I currently work for doesn't know.

HELL IF IT GIVES YOU A JOB AND AN EXTRA COUPLE OF HUNDIES A WEEK DO IT.. If this has something to do with something, then do it. Otherwise dont.. Very simple for me..

Your qualifications other than HIV is what I think they will be really looking at. I worked in Non profits for 10 years and you have to be able to pull wabbits out of your butt all the time...
