Life Expectancy
      #168970 - 01/06/06 02:57 PM

Anyone have and idea of what the average life expectancy of some1 infected today would be? I see people on here whe have been pos for about 4 years and have countless problems then there are people that are 20 plus years pos and have little or no symptoms. I understand everyone is different but I am just wondering if there is a number.

At present expected longevity with HIV and HAART is the same as the general population; however, we have very little data on people with HIV who have survived to live a normal life span. As the cohort ages who were infected after the advent of HAART, we may have reliable longevity data; but, since most people are infected in their twenties and thirties, we may not have reliable longevity data until 2025.

Take heart when I was infected in the early eighties, you were told to get your affairs in order and get ready to die. Now you can lead a nearly normal life, a truly remarkable change.

My ID Specialist says and I quote "You will die of something unlreated to HIV. I recomend that you do not sell your life insurance policy just yet". "Live your dreams, you will be around for them". As long as that person is seeing a HIV doctor and takes "care" of him/herself. This is what the specialists are predicting. I was Infected in 2005 or 2004.

Great words Eric. There really is no way to say. There are so many determaning factors. Are you on meds? Have you had any OI's? How will your immune system react to this disease?

Yup.. I AM GOING TO LIVE.. AND I AM GOING TO LIVE.. AND I AM GOING TO LIVE A LONG LONG TIME. TO MANY PEOPLE, TO MANY FRIENDS, TELL ME THE SAME THING..

MY CONDITION WILL NEVER BECOME A DISEASE...
MY CONDITION WILL NOT DETERMINE MY EXISTANCE..
MY CONDITION WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF BY GOD...
MY CONDITION HAS BEEN LOOKED AT BY A ID SPECIALIST WHO SAYS I HAVE VANTASTIC CHANCES OF LONG TERM LIFE EXPECTANCIES.

I like what I have heard.. I just have to convince my head this a bit more...

Love

Good show Eric. Right now, right here is the most important time and place of your life. The future reveals itself by us taking one fully aware step at a time in the present. I have lived more than twenty-one years with HIV by following that simple maxim as well as another that says "be assured that without a doubt your life is revealing itself as it should."

I'm poz 5 years and started meds last year.. my doc told me i'd live a long, normal life as long as i take care of myself... i've bet most of my friends that i'll out last them! i plan to grow old with my best friends and hopefully my future husband and follow the many dreams and aspiriations i have...

To me, a lot of it is in your head.. if you maintain a positive outlook on life and more importantly yourself, you will be surprised how much better you feel as a person. If you maintain healthy relationships with your friends and have hobbies that you enjoy - again, you'll be more productive...

If you sit around saying - why me? and being all depressed and feeling sorry for yourself, then you will have a negetive view of yourself and your life and probably succumb to the illness that tags along with HIV.

OF course, this is only my opinion..

Be well and take care of yourselves!!!

Lola, I think you are right...a self fulfilling prophecy...if you think that this condition will kill you...it will...if you think and BELIEVE that you will have a long happy healthy and fulfilling life YOU WILL. the mind is a power power tool...use it for your benefit. Have faith and believe in the doctors, and yourselves.

Eric...did you see the doctor??? Those are you new numbers?

That - BIBLE thing is so cool. Thanks! Me and Will get more labs this friday. Be a couple of weeks, then off to the races or maybe not.. I am living today. Today is good.

At work today and I deal with life and death issues. A young women was in distress at 29 years of age. I rendered medical assistance (security EMT trained), comforted and made here feel better as we took her to the hospital. This is the kind of stuff I live for. I wish we did not have to have near death experiences to appreciate what God has given us. 10 years ago, I got a second chance, had 10 years of good stuff, got a husband, dog, 2 homes and enjoy what i do. I wana continue this trend in spite of hiv. With these kinds of posts, these kinds of people in my life, I can attain this. Never in my wildest dreams was I going to do this alone. Never in my mind did I think I had to. I think the long term hiv'ers and short term hiv'ers need just as much reasurance, understanding, respect and care in order to make a go of this. You will see your grandkids grow up, wreck cars, come home drunk, but you will also be able to give them a very special insite into the world we live in. Is that not a gift? WOW..

Love

Thanks for this post Eric. I just found out I was HIV positive 9 hours ago. As I tried to go to bed for the night I started to have a bit of panic. Your quotes and comments may provide enough calm that I can get some sleep tonight. Thanks!

Welcome to the club. I am sorry about your diagnosis, but stay calm, dont stress! Please.. Your going to be fine. Being diagnosed in 2006 is way diff than 1986.. We have all been in your chair. Keep talking, you may even register so we can talk to you by name. Tell us what you are thinking!

Love

Ratboy
