Yet more reason to be cautious about use of HAART and to work on liver health by not drinking alcohol, not smoking, and maintaining a healthy weight.
COMPLICATIONS OF HIV/HAART
Liver-Related Deaths More Common Among HIV-Infected Patients After Controlling for CD4 After controlling for CD4+ cell count, the overall rate of liver-related deaths among HIV-infected people has increased each year since the advent of HAART, according to new results from the massive EuroSIDA study. In analyzing the records of nearly 11,000 European HIV-infected patients, researchers at first found that the overall mortality rate from liver-related disease decreased 7 percent per year during the modern HAART era. However, after controlling for CD4+ cell count (which has generally increased as a result of modern treatment), the mortality rate was actually found to have increased by 13 percent per year. Long-term antiretroviral use, hepatitis C coinfection and hepatitis B coinfection were believed to be the primary causes of the increase.

does this mean that the newer antivirals are really not less toxic, and safer I read that AZT was highly toxic that's why so many people winded up getting aids-related problems but the newer meds didn't have that problem

Good question, I guess the goal now is to take our meds tell the liver can't take anymore. I hear though that meds are better today than before, but its like anything hard on the body. Some vitamins are good for the liver also, so I should research all that out. I take nac and vitamin e right now though. Still though its better to have meds than not have meds. Angela

There is an option that can help. LIV.52 is a natural product which can help to reduce liver enzymes. I'm not usually a big fan of natural supplements since I don't think most of them do what they claim. This one, however seems to have a good track record. This product has been in use in the bodybuilding community for decades to help reduce the on-going toxicity of oral steroids. Mind you...I'm NOT advocating steroids. They are far more toxic to the liver than HIV meds, so I think this product may help with many medications which have to be taken for long periods of time. Milk thistle is pointless (another supplement sold for liver health) which has not been demonstrated to reduce liver enzymes.

without the meds you are looking at 2-10 yrs of life...with em your looking an undetermined amount higher than 10 yrs....now which do you prefer? Just a reminder to all with HIV/AIDS, DEATH in general is more commen in us suffering with HIV/AIDS, than those who dont. Put god in your life, and these worries wont have room to be in it*

Spirituality is important in healing, of course, but equally important is a wise, cautious approach to physical health. Overuse of HAART drugs is as harmful as their disuse. It is important that we educate ourselves, as we do in these pages, and that we challenge our health providers with probing questions and well founded concerns.
Demand quality healthcare, it is your right as a human being.
