No energy......tired all the time
      #158494 - 08/11/05 11:19 AM

This is actually about dealing with my partner who is HIV+ as I am. He is fortunate in that after testing poz 4 yrs ago he is still not on meds. His last labs CD4 - 400+, VL 30,000...I think. The problem I am looking for some help with is he is tired all the time. He works 3 to 4 twelve hours shifts a week with several days off between shifts usually. When he is off all he wants to do is lay around and sleep. He says he has no energy and even worse no sex drive. He tells the our Dr. says this is normal but I don't think so. It is very frustrating....can anyone relate.....can anyone offer me some advice?????

Hi

Try a multivitamin approach, it sounds like his body needs more nutrients and vitamins, try and get a good quality one which conatins everything from A to Z

I used to be tired all the time too. I also work 3-4 12 hr shifts and shift work during the day with lots of days off. I started taking bee pollen with a banana in the am and some ginseng. It really helped my energy level alot. Got my butt up and doing things.

I use to be like that as well but I have a different approach to life these days. I work long days as well and my average day is about 13 hours long. I use to hide in my bed to escape the world becuase I would always be afraid of getting sick and I was constantly being told how important rest was for me but I realised that the isolationn left me depressed so I got out there and started living.

Interestingly, HIV infection lowers levels of testosterone. Low levels of this hormone may lead to fatigue and loss of sex drive. I was on a hormone patch for several years and that treatment was really effective. However, I stopped when I saw studies that testosterone treatment increased the risk of prostate cancer.

Since a bout early this year with cryptococcus infection in my prostate, I've had lower ejaculate volume and I've become chronically fatigued, more so than I have been in ten years. I've learned to start each day with a plan, and then I work that plan. I write things down I want to do, checking them off as I finish. I also try to walk as much as I can which boosts my endorphins, making me feel energized.

Yep...BTDT..Been There Done That...energy levels really suck...I fine coffee helps...but there are times I just want to sit outside weather permitting in a chair in the shade an just relax
...I know you want more energy....eat good and eat right look for foods with anti oxidentds and get more B-12 in your diet...
helps build blood and helps give you more energy....
Easy Does It.....
Medications can have alot to do with it......

There are many reasons your partner could have no energy or sex drive. It could be HIV, it could be the medicines, or it could even be depression from the HIV (or anything else).

First...check his medications. If he's on Combivir (which contains AZT) he could be slightly anemic. That always saps one's energy and sex drive. If this one applies, you could consider switching the Combivir to Truvada since Truvada does not contain AZT.

Two...have your doctor measure his free testosterone. If it's low, sex drive and energy and mood will all likely be in the dumpster. There are replacement options here which are quite good such as Androgel, testosterone patches, etc...

Three...have you ruled out any other illnesses? If not, work with your doctor here.

Four...could be depression. It is not uncommon for HIV'ers (or anyone) to suffer from depression. Medication and/or counseling can help here.

Quite frankly, it could be any combination of the above items. Of course, exercise, good diet, and proper amounts of sleep are all essential as well.

Good luck. I hope that gives you some starting points.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
First, I should have said my partner is not on any meds for HIV. He is a very slow progressor but that is another story and problem.
Second, he tells me that the doctor says everything is "normal" with his testostrone levels, etc. Don't know if this is true or not just have to take his word for it.
Third, I do think it could very well be depression not only about our/his HIV status but also about getting older. Neither of these are things either of us can do anything about. He is on an anti depressant and I have tried to get him to see about upping the dosage or getting a different one but he is very stubborn so what is one to do.
Fourth, we both could use the exercise but because of work schedules it is difficult and neither of us is movitvated enough to do it on our own individually.
So, there is the rest of the story as they say.

There is a great new and all natural energy drink that is available at www.myviaoffice.com/auroramt25. It is taking the market by storm and is awesome. I advise it for everyone. More bounce to the ounce!
