I need some suggestions here. My father has AIDS and my sister (whose only 4) may be HIV pos. They are both visiting from out of town and I've noticed a lot of ignorance when it comes to 2 of my family members and how it's spread. Please someone, anyone help me with what I can tell these family members. I really would like to speak to someone. Thanks!

Hey KoKo,
You are very kind to want to help with your father and little sister and the fact they both may have contracted the virus...Unfortunately, there is no easy way to help with the Stigma that goes along with this disease...I have found it to be very hard myself, with only few people knowing(one in which is a family member as well) and I dont think truly once someone has made up there mind about a specific disease or the fear from someone having it, that they ever truly feel comfortable or change their minds about their feelings towards the people that are positive...
You seem like a smart person with a good sense of decency as wellas common sense..I wish there were more people like you in this world...then maybe the stigma that goes with this disease would not be as bad as it is!
You can print out info on contracting HIV from this website or others and give it to the family members of question and help to educate them...you can talk openly about it to them and answer questions they may be thinking or may have....If that does not work then I just dont know where or what to tell you to do...educating the people is the most important part of the process...they need to know that hugging and kissing and loving is not going to give them HIV/AIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sexual contact without protection with someone who is known to be infected or unknown status, needle sharing, blood tranfusions(less frequent with blood donors being screened more carefully now) and blood to blood contact BUT this would have to be somewhat big in order to transmit enough virus into the system...little papercuts I really dont think would fit in this category, although the people can use a bandaid if they are really scared of it.....
I hope this has helped you a bit...there is lots of info out there on HIV/AIDS and precautions to take...Good luck to you...you have a difficult job ahead of you....God Bless...~Jessie~

Hi Koko,
It's the stigma and ignorance that is the worst part of tis disease. You could call your local health dept and they should have some literature and you your self can learn from the computer and teach them your self. I always compare this to something that is really devastating. For example the bolla virus, cancer, scherladerma, which is a horrific desease of ones skin and organs harden like stone. And you must truly believe it in your heart so you can make these statements with confidence. And remember It's not that easy to catch from another unless its sex or drug sharing. You can difuse the fears of others. Ill keep you in my prayers and if you'd like to e-mail me Im at flogeo@comcast.net. Im truly sorry for your dad and little sister . Its the little ones that are innocent victims. Your friend if you want, Flo

Well, I don't know how you can educate these people. It seems as if they must have been living under a rock for the past 20 years or something. I would take information right off this very website to show them.
There will be no transmission of HIV to anyone of your family members unless they plan on having sex with each other or sharing needles. So, tell them to take a deep breath, relax, and find it within themselves to treat them with respect.

What you need to tell your family members is that God never wished this disease on anyone, but HIV is a biological disease that affects many groups of people and not only gays and drug addicts. This disease as you know is well documented in Africa and even in the middle east. Tell them the truth and I hope they understand! Good luck to you.

i think you don't have to worry about their visit, there is no way will get AIDs by someone with it visiting you, AIDs does not come in that way, more over they need your love and compartion and support from you, in this way you can make them feel happy and over come some of their problems, people with HIV and AIDs need support and love from their families and friends arounds
