I was diagnosed with Aids April 2000. I was very sick at the time during the 8 and a 1/2 weeks I was hospitalized. The virus attacked my spine and I am now living with a spinal disease called myelopathy which enables me to walk. I also developed neuropathy from my mid thigh down to my feet. I have been in a wheelchair almost 5 years. I am able to use a walker for short distances. If anyone suffers from this disease or knows anyone that does, please contact me. Thank you! Charles N.C. My husband was diagnosed last year, he also got very sick and it seems the virus also attack his nerves ., his sight got bad, he can only see 10% , his bladder is not working and he cannot walk, only with a walker for short distance. He is living in Africa, and there the health care is not so far as in europe or in the states. After a 6 weeks break he restarted physotheraphe, as his legs are very strong but he cannot cordinate, his doctor tells us that he is in this situation because of the medication he is taking and that it will not get worse and he will improve but it will take a long time.we are hoping that when we are patient his situation will improve. We were told that vitamines could also be some kind of a help. I am know consulting docters in europe maybe they can advice me some medication or whatever. I really hope somebody coul advice us. He is 65 and that also makes it more difficult. Anyhow we should not give up and keep on fighting.

My best friend of many years was diagnosed in December'04 with demyelenating polyneuropathy. He was getting progressively weaker for several weeks until one day he lost muscle movement in his legs and fell down a flight of stairs. He landed at the bottom of the stairs on his lower spine, resulting in a lot of bruising and swelling (but not broken). Since that time, they told him that he has Guillian Barre syndrome, a type of neuropathy secondary to viral infection(HIV). He still can't walk, feed himself, go to the bathroom by himself...He just recently began eating solid food since regaining muscle control in his esophagus. He's been in rehab for a few weeks now because they said there's nothing else they can do for him in the hospital. Progess is very slow, but I'm seeing subtle signs of improvement. The docs aren't saying whether or not he'll recover completely. If he does, it'll take a very long time. By the way....it was only in December when this happened that he found out he was positive. He suspects he was infected 7 years ago from an ex-BF. So, his CD4 count was very low and his viral load was spiking. Now he's on meds and dealing with this new way of life.
