Food, Nutrition, and HIV Conference in Boston, on December 6



The Food, Nutrition, and HIV Conference is a day-long event for HIV-positive persons and front-line service providers.

It is organized by the AIDS Action Committee's HIV Health Institute.



The event is free for HIV-positive consumers, and for nutrition and public health students.



The event will be held between 9 am and 3 pm at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury Crossing (Boston), Massachusetts.

The morning will feature informative presentations and a panel discussion. The afternoon will feature a Health and Food Fair (described in detail below)

You are welcome to come for all or part of the day.



Here is a summary of the expected conference highlights:



A Healthy Diet for Positives - Noted nutritionist Charlie Smigelski, R.D, of Fenway Community Health will give a keynote presentation called "A Healthy Diet for Positives." He will review the special dietary needs of persons living with HIV and discuss healthy food choices for positives.


Nutrition Programs for Persons Living with HIV - David Waters, Executive Director of Community Servings, will provide an overview of nutrition programs for HIV-positive persons. He will also discuss efforts to ensure that persons living with HIV continue to have access to food and nutritional support.


Panel Discussion: "Nutrition, supplements, and you: Update on the role of nutritional supplements, side effect management, and nutrient/drug interactions" - An expert panel will discuss these important issues for HIV-positive persons and the nutritionists who work with them. The panelists include: Chris Casale of Statscript Pharmacy; Sheila Davis of the New England AIDS Education and Training Center; Kristen Porter of Pathways for Wellness; and Charlie Smigelski of Fenway Community Health


PLUS: Afternoon Health and Food Fair - There will be booths with detailed information about food and nutrition programs for persons living with HIV. There will also be samples of food supplements and nutritional products suitable for HIV+ persons.


The registration fee for the program is $25 for front-line providers and nutritionists. Nursing CEUs will be available at a small additional fee.





A light breakfast and a full buffet lunch will be provided at no cost.

Wow, wish I lived a little closer (NW to be exact), I have been doing research into HIV/nutrition. This sounds awesome. Hopefully they'll have one in my area, great idea. Nutrition
(or lack of) can really affect HIV progression, etc. Thanks for this info!

Wish I lived closer as well...and could get the time off from work too! Great topics and sounds very informative....hiv/nutrition does happen to be an important topic and all should go if able to....if not I see a group of people with the same dx as myself and others like us and we all talk with professionals at my doc office/hospital about this topic..it is VERY IMPORTANT TO STAY FIT AND EAT HEALTHY!!!! Thanks for the reminder and hope you get some good info from the conference that maybe you can share with us...~Jessie~
