I may be losing my health insurance. That in itself is a nightmare, but I would have to pay for my own meds. The ADAP program in my State requires I have insurance. I can do that for about a year out of my retirement fund, which is all the income I have, and after paying thousands of uncovered bills I will have little $ left. I had to quit work, but denied SSDI. My health is too unpredictable to work anymore, but I am not "sick" enough according to all the experts. What financial assistance is there? What States (cities) have better resources for PWHIV? I will move if needed.

Massachusetts will provide assistance and cover your meds while you apply for mass health. Look for the HDAP program. If you have ins., it will cover the copayments if your salary is under 50,000 and they will also cover all of your meds if you are unemployed. Another option is that they will cover the cobra payments until you get additional ins. coverage. This will cover your doctor visits.

New York State will give you ADAP and ADAP plus regardless, I believe. That will cover your meds and your Doctor's office visits as well as a bunch of stuff, they used to have dental, not sure where that is right now. You do need to make less than a certain amont which I think is 45,000. If you have Insurance that is lapsing NYS will pick up the payment to continue your coverage for hospitalization but you have to already have the coverage. They do not offer hospitilization coverage to someone who has none to begin with. New York State is not a bad place to be if you have HIV. There are also a lot of HIV support services in NYC. Good Luck.

I am sorry you are going through so much hardship with all this insurance nonsense...It really does suck when people do not understand what the costs are for medical or medication when you have hiv. I live in New York and my husbands health is not all that good and he is hiv+ and recieves ADAPT with no insurance required. I am sorry I could not be more help to you and hope that you are able to make the changes needed to get the services you rightfully deserve...Good luck and God bless...~Jessie~

The factual premise of your post is false: ADAP is for people who do not have insurance, though many state programs will assist you with insurance premiums or copayments if you would otherwise qualify for ADAP. I would recommend checking the Project Inform website (do a Google search for the link), which has a comprehensive description of ADAP programs in each state, which vary widely in their eligibility requirements. I would highly recommend moving to a more generous state if necessary.

I have a plan that would give you up to 30% off your meds. I also offer a three tiered pharmacy plan - tier 1 $10, tier 2 $20, and tier 3 are specially discounted costs. I have a client with MS who saves $350/month on one of her meds. It's like I gave her a raise of $350/month -- great deal when you are on a fixed income. Go to my website to find out the details -- www.ghspartners.com/carolwarnock
