my CD4 counts dropped. is this normal?
      #111482 - 09/10/04 10:11 AM

I have been infected for just 8 months and have been on meds. My CD4 counts rose to 416 and i am undetectable in viral load. My question is, last week, my CD4 counts dropped to 386. Is this normal? do they fluctuate? I'm worried that my meds are starting to be unaffective.

do you mean you found out you're pos 8 months ago? If that's what you intended to say, then I'm sure you know you may have been infected years ago. Yes. The drop in cd4 is normal. Yes they fluctuate and, really, that's not a big drop. Mine dropped 400 points the months after I tested + then came back up a couple hundred later. If you're not seeing a specialist I suggest looking one up at least to check in with along with your regular doc. As long as you're undetectable and not ill, don't worry. Be sure you talk about this with your doc too & get his/her thoughts. all my best.

Don't be alarmed. The numbers will fluctuate. My CD4 count actually dropped from 900 to 350. However, it is back over 600. There are a number of factors which could cause your numbers to dip. Just keep an eye on them and you will see them sort of roller coaster. Good Luck!

Yes, it's normal for CD4 counts to fluctuate. It varies according to time of day and which lab did the test. I work in a lab doing these tests every day, and I can assure you that variations DO occur. We do T-cell subset measurement by a procedure called flow cytomerty. We quantitate CD3, CD4, CD8 and related calculations. Each lab will have differences in results obtained. That's why it's important to be consistant in where you have your tests done (go to the same place each time). Try to be consistant in the time of day you are tested. We find that CD4 counts are higher in the morning than they are later in the day. So, if you want to get the most accurate profile of yourself, standardize your schedule.
Hope this helps, and good luck!
By the way, my CD4 count has fallen from 690 to 425 in less than 6 months. I'm not on meds though, so I expected my counts to behave this way. I'll probably be starting meds soon, and I am very scared of the side effects. I don't want to take time off work and "outing" myself to my colleages.
Best of luck :)
