Pre-med vitamins and nutritional supplements
      #102075 - 07/21/04 03:09 PM

Hello,
I'm newly positive, and I don't yet require any meds. (My viral load is low, and my T-cells are high.) I was wondering if anyone had any advice on preventative measures to take now that I'm early in my HIV infection. Does anyone recommend any specific over-the-counter vitamin combinations or other nutritional supplement regimens? Any other advice to delay HIV progression?

There is a good book called "Nutrition and Hiv, A new model for treatment" by Mary Romeyn, M.D. I have gotten alot of useful information from it and I highly recommend it to everyone. The best thing you can do at this point is to take multi vitamins, eat healthy, cut down on your fast food intake and eat lots of vegitables. If you smoke, stop. I smoked heavily for the first 4 years of my being positive and felt miserable all the time. My counts were always bad and I felt tired all the time. When I quit I felt better all over, and my counts started to look better. If you drink, do it in moderation. Don't binge drink, and don't drink til inebriation, it really hurts your immune system. The most important thing you can do at this point is to keep a positive attitude, don't let this disease turn you into a negative nelly. It will run you into the ground fast.
People with HIV may benefit from taking supplements of the following vitamins and minerals:

B Vitamins: Vitamin B-1 (Thiamine), Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine), Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin), and Folate (Folic Acid).

Antioxidants, including beta-carotene (the body breaks down beta-carotene to make Vitamin A), selenium, Vitamin E (Tocopherol), and Vitamin C.

Magnesium and Zinc

I don't take any supplements but I do exercise regularly. I noticed after beginning a stringent exercise plan, my T-cells went up and my viral load down significantly. My viral load was over 80,000 and it fell to 20,000. My CD4 went up about 100 points.
