16 year old girl needs help
      #998 - 03/30/00 10:40 PM

16 year old girl needs your help!!!

Please help answer some questions that have been on my mind for a
while now. I am a 16 year old girl who has never had sex but has
engaged in oral sex (to a male) twice. I know the risk is slim
but now I'm scared I might have HIV. I've been VERY tired for a
long time - since one particular incident especially, and have
been sick a lot more than I used to be. I know this isn't a very
good basis for believing that I have HIV or AIDS but it scares me
nonetheless. I have had numerous blood tests done that confirm
that something is abnormal. I have not been specifically tested
for HIV because in response to my doctor's inquiries I said I was
not and had never been sexually active (which is the truth.)
Today my doctor told me that I have an abnormal amount of T-cells
in my blood (higher than normal) which leads him to believe I
could have some sort of infection or virus. I'm scared it could
be HIV. However, I read that HIV attacks the body's T-cells, so
that in actuality if I had HIV wouldn't the count be LOWER than
normal? (Please say yes!) I'm so scared! Please mhelp me out
here!

REPLY TO 16 YEAR OLD GIRL

Yes you are right in the case of hiv+ people the T-cell count or
as we call it the cd4 count is lower than normal people but what
the doctor told you could be true because any person who goes for
a check-up and during that period even if he has flu or any other
mild illness which may result in a virus or infection and because
of that his T-cell count will go up only temprorary also you have
not mentioned what type of oral sex you had with the male as well
as if you think he had a open past but ususally there is minimum
risk in oral sex but please get your hiv test done i am sure it
will come out negative i will pray for you

Has your doctor considered testing for epstein-barr virus? (ie mononeucleosis)? Mono will cause symptoms of fatigue and feeling unwell. Have HIV test done, talk to your doctor, and relax. If you are going to engage in oral sex use a condom to avoid contact with fluids. If he (bf) doesn't like that tell him tough sh*t. You don't have to do anything you don't feel comfortable with.
