Antibodies vs Antibodies
      #99484 - 06/04/04 12:47 AM

I have read here that having herpes will not affect your hiv test. Okay so I am likely splitting hairs here but since this is my life I need to know. If I had contracted Herpes and HIV at the same time and my body began making antibodies immediately, would it make sense that my body concentrated on herpes and made antibodies to it as it had immediate infectious symptoms. Thus causing my elisa test to be negetive for HIV antibodies? Somebody put a fork in my theory please. I tested negetive through 10 weeks, so far!

HIV begins replication as soon as it enters the body. Your body also recognizes this and starts producing antibodies. At first all of the antibodies produced are used up fighting the initial replication. As the virus increases your body now puts up a majior fight and increases antibodies at a much faster rate. This is the time some people get ARS. The antibody tests can measure the EXCESSIVE antibodies once there are some left over from the initail fight. Your body can fight more than one at a time but that obviously puts a strain on it. The test are very sensitive now and @ 10 you should hae produced detectable antibodies. Get tested in a few more you are most likly NEG hope this helps good luck D.J.

Coinfection of herpes and hiv will have absolutely no impact on your hiv test. If you have tested negative through 10 weeks, you squeaked by this time. The CDC still recommends testing at 13 weeks. However, I would see a 10 week negative as conclusive unless you are an IV drug user or have a immune system disorder. Test at 13 weeks for peace of mind (and for the CDC)! You are negative, chico.
Play it safe from here on out. Sorry to hear about the herpes. As you can see, there are other stds that are much easier to catch than hiv.
