fever

I had a semi risky exposure back in 10-1998. I scared shitless after that. Within 6 weeks or so, I discovered I had a persistant low grade fever of 98.8 to 99.4. The fever always starts around noon and slowly subsides after about 8pm at night. It happened every damned day. I went to see 4-5 specialists about my fever, and I had numerous tests done: over 10 ELISAs 1-2, DNA PCR (4-5 times), bDNA from Chiron, some western blots (on requests), I tested all these all the way to 15-months post exposure. Every single tests came back negative. However, my damned low grade fever persists!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I stopped measuring my temps about 6 months ago and tried to forget about it. Why do I measure it so much? It is because whenever my temp is high, my eyes would feel itchy and warm, and I would feel very tired (yawn all the time). Anyway, for the last several months when I stopped measuring my temp., I didn't feel as bad an itchy eyes as before -- I thought I was over this damned nightmare. Starting last week, my eye itchiness is getting bad again, and of course my temp is always 99-99.2 in the afternoon! all the doctors insisted they couldn't help me no more. I wasted over 5k on all these testings and had gone through numerous sleepless nights. I might have been the most tragic cases of all on these boards in terms of testing. Why not forget about the temp? It is because the eye itchiness associated with the fever is very irritating. The question is: anyone of who heard of any person indeed infected with HIV has had this long period of persistant fever???? No doctors believe this is HIV-related. I now need info. from the general public. I appreciate any comments.

I guess I did almost the same. Just can't believe the test result. The different is only I am in 20 weeeks rather than 15 months. I believe the stress is your problem. Once I have the stress, temp goes up and also the body starts to react something funny. After a while, I try to control myself and it will come back normal. This hiv fear is really eating people up. After 15 months, you should forget about the hiv and move on. It is how to adjust the fear and no medcine can help.

I understand your stress.....but your tests came back negative. I never read about a persistant low grade fever associated with HIV. In the worst case......you would have very high fevers with other serious complications as well if you had HIV. But again you tested negative!!! However I do not believe that you reading these boards will be enough for you. I suggest that you seek some other sort of therapy to deal with your anxiety. I am sorry that you are living in this fear..but you tested negative my friend. If I may.....I suggest that you seek some counseling about your concerns. Chances are there is nothing wrong with you and your fevers are caused by stress. I can tell you that my fevers were caused by stress. You need to move on....
Good luck...

What you describe are really "normal" fluctuations in temperature during the course of a day. If you read the literature on body temperature, your temp is lowest first thing when you get up in the morning, slowly rises during the course of the day, peaking at about dinner time, and then slowly dropping as you relax through the evening.

I had the same thing. I had all the tests. Actually, it turns out that the doctors tell me that I have had a flare up of Epstein Barr virus (the same thing that causes mono when you are a teenager). Did you have an EBV test? You might try it.

By the way, no matter what MAY be the cause of your temp (if anything since nothing you described is really abnormal), it is NOT hiv and you have no need to worry about that further.

Good luck to you.

About 16 years ago, I was in University, and was stressed out. I had exactly the same symptoms...itchy eyes, even skin rashes. Eventually, it went away after exams and all. I believe stress has a big part to play in ones life. Painful tongue is also stresses related. In fact, I still get pain at the sides of the tongue, primarily due to the clenching of the teeth and rubbing the tongue against them. You had had numerous test over so many years. Have you tried counselling? We all know for a fact that you are negative. Try meditation, relaxation techniques. Good luck.

Wow, you've spent a lot of money on tests. From my personal experience going through so much anxiety, talking to people helped a lot. The counsellors at the GMHC hotline were the best! They didn't treat me like a nutcase, they just gave me straight facts. Good luck to you.
