HIV and HEP-C co-infection
      #96998 - 04/29/04 12:03 PM

i know this might sound like a stupid question but is it possible to pick up both HIV and HEP-C from one unprotected, penis/vaginal sexual encounter ? and if so, can this cause problems with an HIV test at 3 months ? co-infection ?
thanks
regards
peter

It's not a stupid question. There are many individuals that are co-infected with HCV and HIV. It is very difficult to treat HCV once the individual develops AIDS. People with HIV are definitely at risk for opportunistic infections once AIDS develops.

As to picking up both HCV and HIV during unprotected sex is not very likely. HCV can be spread via sexual intercouse. It is more likely to get infected with HCV by sharing infected needles or being exposed to blood; on the other hand, HIV does not survive that long out in the open environment. So HCV is what you'd need to worry about if you were exposed to blood spillage, shared needles, razors, and even tooth brushes with blood on it.

thanks for that explanation, much appreciated.
one more question; if (in the unlikely situation) i picked up both HCV and HIV could the HCV cause problems when testing for HIV in 3 months ?

Hi Peter,

Answer is no. HCV will not complicate your HIV testing.

Cheers!

Also HEP C is mostly common with IV drug users who share needles. The vast majority of HIV and Hep C individuals are IV Drug Users.

It is unlikely from your incident you were infected with Hep C. But HIV is still an issue. Get tested.
