I had a routine HIV test done two weeks ago. The result was indeterminate. I am not a "high risk" individual. My last sexual contact was vaginal sex, unprotected, about 90 days ago with a good friend who claims to be clean. I have only been with two different women in the past 5 years. What other factors may bring on an indeterminate result? I'm I freaking out for no reason over here!!! I know that I have to be re-tested, but I would like some more info to help calm the stress for the next 4 weeks.

Hello there. I'm sure an indeterminate result would make you a little nervous. There are many factors that influence an indeterminate reading on the Western Blot. Ask yourself whether you got a flu shot recently. I know you're going to worry constantly unless you know for sure that you are cleared. My advice is to have either the lab or clinician do a 3rd generation HIV test which picks up on all of the HIV variants out there. There are tests that pick up antigens to both HIV-Type I and HIV-Type II. HIV-II is rare in the US but is here. And just as an advice, I would never trust anyone's "word" regarding their HIV status. Always always use protection. Good luck to you!
