STD
      #95481 - 04/15/04 12:35 PM

I was recently diognosed with a STD that I received from receptive oral sex. I keep reading that people with STDs are more likely to contract HIV whikle I also read that it is very unlikely that a person would contract HIV from receptive oral sex. This is confusing to me. I'm about done with the meds Dr. gave and had a HIV test that was neg. Am I at risk of HIV infection from receptive oral sex, I am a male otherwise very healthy. Could one of you please help me with this conflict in information.

Was the receptive oral sex with a man or a woman? That makes a difference in your risk, but not by much. Receptive oral sex carries a very very low risk and yes, it is rare for HIV to be transmitted that way.

STI's are not that difficult to transmit, however, since most are far more contagious than HIV. You do sound a little confused, so hopefully I will be able to help a little bit. Look at it this way. If you have either active syphillis or herpes sores that come into contact with semen or vaginal fluids, those open sores are openings to your body. They are giving HIV more portals of entry to your bloodstream than would normally be there.

Just because you got a STI from someone, doesn't mean that you also got HIV from them. Them having a STI and HIV doesn't make it easier for you to get HIV.

Thanks switch I was the insertive partner in a male to male contact my concerd was that it was easier to contract HIV if the person also had an STI as if the STI helped the HIV be introduced into the system of the neg. partner as a carrier. From what I understand of your statement it only helps if the STI has compromised the integrity of the area of contact? My reason for concern was a encounter envolving oral sex, I received from a person that gave me the gonareha (Spell?) since I was clean prior to the oral sex that led me to being infected with the STI Do you think that the likleyhood of HIV infection is infact low(if this person even had HIV)?
