hsv1 can appear on your lips or genitals anywhere where 3-21 days after exposure or it may lay dormint and never errupt. you can get an antibody test but the doctors advise that testing for antibodies is best done 8-16 weeks.
hsv1 produces painful sores on the lips that first appear to be like small white heads but there are several of them, they ozzzz and then they crust over - they HURT! (dont pick at them or the puss like substance, thats the virvus- not pus) if you have a hsv outbreak on your lips - you would know it.
go to www.afraidtoask.com or any herpes website has info and most have pictures.

Oral herpes caused by HSV1 (Herpes Simplex Virus 1) do not produce sores in the mouth, but rather on the lips or around the outside of the mouth. HSV2, the virus that causes genital herpes, can infect the inside of the mouth but only .02% of oral herpes cases are caused by HSV2.

Most people who have either HSV1 or HSV2 never show any symptoms at all. Or the initial outbreak is so mild it goes unnoticed. The virus can then lay dormant for years before another outbreak or the person could never have another outbreak again. A small number of people have frequent outbreaks.

The way you become infected with herpes is by your mucous membranes coming into direct contact with an active herpes sore. Yes, there is asymptomatic shedding (the virus being transmitted with no symptoms present) but only HSV2 is capable of asymptomatic shedding and that is for only 2 to 3 days out of the year.
