retest?
      #86578 - 02/08/04 02:20 PM

hi,
i am a 27 y.o. straight male. i had sex with a stripper in late january of 2002, the condom broke. i took an hiv blood test in late june of 2002. it came back negative. however, in a twelve month period since i have had 3 cold sore outbreaks, 2 within 1 month of each other. i have also developed dry mouth, along with painless sores that develop almost once a month on the edge of my tongue. sometimes painful sores the size and shape of a small pimple on my tongue preceed them. my question is whether the hiv test of 2002 was as accurate as those today and should i retest?
thank you.

Dear Anon:

The CDC has revised the conclusive window period for testing to only 3 months.

Hence, your test is conclusive.

The CDC revised the window period to 3 months in November of 2001. Long before your test in June of 2002. You test is conclusive.

HIV doesn't cause cold sores. Herpes does.

There's absolutely no need to retest. It's just going to cost you more money and more anxiety and it will yield negative results again. Don't worry, you are negative. Congrats!
