Losing Hope Fast
      #86553 - 02/08/04 04:22 AM

After having sex with a girl (The condom slipped off) I contracted something about a week later. I had to pee every other minute, aches, sore throat, swollen tonsil, dark-colored spot on the head of my penis, etc. I went to the doctor, who gave me a shot of Cipro & the next day I was fine. However, months later I still continue to have a swollen tonsil, the spots, and sometime lumps in my armpits. I confronted the girl & she told me she was clean . I took a elisa tests a little after 2 1/2 months after the incident(It came back negative). I've seen a few doctors since then that put me on antibotics, none of which has helped my throat. I'm going to test again in a couple of days, but I'm really losing hope. I'm really scared.

Dear Anon:

A persistant sore throat or swollen tonsil is not remotely associated with primary HIV infection.

Your 10 week test is all but conclusive.

HIV is a difficult virus to transmit (more so from female to male). Your condom offered you some protection despite it slipping off. This was a one time exposure with no menstrual blood present. Plus, there is a great chance the girl is negative. These facts taken together put your risk of HIV infection at one in the millions.

Retest at 13 weeks. When you get that negative, you are through with HIV as far as I am concerned.

See and Ear, Nose and Throat specialist about your throat.

Good Luck, and keep us posted.

Jazz

I think you are fine. Like Jazzy said, a 10 week negative is a great sign! Most people will seroconvert between 4-6 weeks after infection. Test again at 13 weeks, but I am confident that result will be negative, also.

Amanda
