ARS question
      #8591 - 08/18/00 04:21 PM

I keep reading posts about individuals who feel as though they are undergoing ARS symptoms. Does anyone know the percentage of people who have ARS symptoms? I sometimes read 30 to 75 percent. The 40 percent difference defintely would make a difference. That can mean 3 out of 10 or 8 out of 10. Does anyone know of any good info sites with the relevant info?

You are posting on the best one I am aware of. Statistics show that "up to 80%" of people will undergo some ARS symptoms, however up to half of the ones that do will have symptoms so mild that they will go unnoticed, while others will write the whole thing off as the flu and not consider hiv. Key here, do not attempt to match symptoms of whatever you have or might get to hiv.... they will drive you crazy and odds are so high that it is something else.

here is some good data....

Acute retroviral syndrome comprises symptoms occurring during HIV seroconversion. What are the most common of these symptoms?
In a study of 77 patients with primary HIV infection, 96% of symptomatic patients suffered fever, 67% reported skin rash, 61% complained of headache, 61% had malaise, and 61% complained of lethargy. Five patients were asymptomatic and insufficient information was available for 1 patient. For the remaining 71 patients, the mean duration of symptoms lasted 31 +/- 3.1 days (range 3 to 180).
