PCR/ELISA & "Hiding HIV"
      #8329 - 08/12/00 09:42 PM

I tested negative on a standard ELISA test AND a DNA PCR test at almost 5 months post-exposure. The results were negative. Nevertheless, joint and node pain continues. I can't stop thinking that HIV is somehow hiding in my nodes and thus escaping detection on the tests??

Is HIV capable of "hiding?" Thanks.

did you have any other symptoms? Did you have any other infections? Sometimes when there are multiple infections, seroconversion can be delayed due to the response of the body to the other pathogens as well. If you have not gotten any other illnesses at the same time, then you are fine. HIV will not hide from the dna tests. If it is there, it will be seen.

HIV doesn't hide in the same sense people hide. "Hiding" refers to after a patient has been treated and the virus is still in the nervous system where the drugs can't reach. The human body doesn't allow certain chemicals into certain parts of the nervous system to protect the brain. When the drugs are no longer being taken then the virus multiplies and spreads again. This is true of many viruses. However unless you are taking HIV medications then you are negative!!! Go to your doctor and see what he says about your symptoms.
