The 3d Generation Test and False Positives: Help!
      #8157 - 08/09/00 11:35 AM

I've been reading what people like Not Scared and others have written about the 3d generation Elisa test that tests for both HIV-1 and HIV-2. I got one of those blood tests yesterday and it is being sent to the Nichols Institute in California. I should know by Tuesday what the results are.

Question: Are those tests likely to give false positives? Someone said they are so sensitive that they often need confirmatory tests, like a follow-up Western blot. Does anyone know about this? I took the crazy test b/c I'm at 6 months and want to be completely finished with it all, and to also know I don't have HIV-2.

Can anybody answer this question?

Thanks so much.

Hey Buddy,

Don't worry about the false positive (ELSA), these tests are screened again and again. If by chance the test was wrong and it indicated a false positive they would automatically test you again. I have asked this same question again and again to specialits. Don't worry, it is the most accurate type of test in medicine today. A lot rides on this test so you can believe everything is done right. This was told to me by more than one doctor/specialist. If your test results are negative at six months this is more than enough. It's a done deal! After this get on with your life and practice safe sex (or whatever) in the future.

I wouldn't worry about the false positive thing for a couple of reasons.

First of all, the ELISA test will be run at least 2 times (and sometimes even 3 times, depending on the lab). If one of these tests is positive, then they'll run the Western Blot. If it's negative, you have a false positive, and that's nothing to worry about at all, especially considering the point you're at now.

Also, I've been tested a few times in my life because of this HIV fear problem I have, and it has been with a 3rd generation test at all times. No false positives for me. Only negative results.

Finally, although people say that false positives are more common in 3rd generation tests than first generation test, it is still a LOT less common than a false positive on a PCR test! I think you've had one of those, right? If you can get through that, you can certainly get through this! That's because the confirmatory test that is available with the ELISA basically tells you that a false positive is the same thing as a negative result. You don't have that luxury with a PCR test.

The problem with ELISA is that it gives false positive tests after the window period. That is, the ELISA is so sensative that it won't miss an infection, but it can say that one is present when in fact, it is not. It does not often happen.

Any testing facility will perform one or two types of followups with the same sample. The Western Blot is used to rule out False Positives. You will not be told of a false positive, because the Western Blot will be performed before you get your result.

Don't worry, come Tuesday you will be feeling great. Good luck!

I had a negative hiv 1 & 2 test at 4 months. Its know how sensitive they are but the method they use. With this method the research of the virus is more accurate and sensitive but that DOESNT MEAN in any way it can produce more false positives. Remember that these test are used in Europe and they wouldnt let those test be available if they knew they were producing more false positives.
I think youre huge amount of tests are OVERKILL. I think and many doctors too that with your negative pcr test and the 3 months negative test that would be more than enough. Good luck, bye.

Thanks for the notes. I am still sweating it out. They said 3-5 days, so maybe it will be here Friday. I just want to be over and done with. Overkill, I know, but I needed this last test to make sure all my bases are covered.

Thanks for the notes.
