I know this is slightly out of place, but there is no other good forum for sexually transmitted diseases that I could find. For those of you worried about obtaining herpes (I see a lot of questions about unprotected oral sex), the window period for a blood test is 12 - 16 weeks. This is the information given to me by the National Herpes Hotline (1-919-361-8488). They told me that they believe about 30% of genital herpes is caused by the type I virus (normally associated with oral herpes) so oral sex is a risk. However, they wouldn't give me any statistics on the chance of infection from a single incident. If they didn't have any sores, the chance they were even infectious drops to 2 - 6 percent. The other information they passed on was to call them for the specific blood tests to get. Many doctors will run tests that could give false positives should you ever have had chicken pox or mono. Hope this information helps some of you out there.

yes, it is difficult to find another forum to discuss this std. It is equally important to understand that herpes is one of the common std and people sould avoid unprotected oral sex too. Thanks for the information regarding the window period.

The knowing what tests to ask the doc for is a good point. Chicken Pox, Shingles, Mono (EBV), and Cytomegalovirus (CMV) are all part of the herpes family, just variants of the same virus that have different genetic codes. I had chicken pox at 33 years old, and it was a beast!
