Canada's window period?
      #79568 - 12/29/03 10:45 PM

I read that in Canada, the window period is 6 weeks to 2 months. Is this true? Do they use the same Elsa tests as we have here or do they use another type test that picks up HIV earlier and faster and more accurately? Why doesnt the USA use this time frame as well? Shouldnt the window be the same for all countries since the disease is the same?

The 6 week window period is also used in Mass.. Reason being is that most people that have contracted hiv will show positive by that time. Mass also use a PCR with in the first few weeks to detect the virus it self then a follow up at 6 weeks with an antibody test. The 3 month period is set far enough out to catch almost everyone,... notice I said almost everyone, Some people could take longer... So rule of thumb 3 months ie 13 weeks is good... if one is neg by that time chances are they are not infected K hope that helps :)
