are these ARS symptoms? pls help
      #78367 - 11/17/03 06:07 PM

Here's my story:

About 10 weeks ago i had unprotected insertive vaginal sex with a woman i met at a bar. I was somewhat drunk, and I think she was too. Anyway, it only lasted about 1 minute before i came to my senses and pulled out! she was a total stranger, and i haven't seen her since (i was moving to another city, was under stress, etc.)

2 weeks later i had a scratchy throat which came off and on for 2 weeks. Then it hit me! 2 more weeks of a sore throat. No fever, no swollen lymph nodes. I did have a very stiff (not sore) neck muscle, as if i slept in a bad position. 1 week into my sore throat i lost my voice! couldn't talk for 2 days. then i started coughing up plegm (yellowish) and my throat began to clear. after my sore throat went away (2 weeks) i started to cough. it was constant nagging coughing for about 1 week. that brings us to today. i still have a lingering cough. It's about 10 weeks now since i've had the encounter.

i had an hiv test done 2 weeks after the encounter. negative. i'm planning on having one next week.

are these symtoms associated with seroconversion? what is my likelyhood that i now am hiv +?

please help. very worried and convinced never to do something this stupid ever again!

ARS symptoms typically occur between 2-4 weeks. The symptoms come at the same time, then self-resolve in about a week. ARS symptoms don't linger as you describe your symptoms as doing.

Transmission from female to male does not occur often. Your test at 2 weeks was too soon to be of any use. However, a test at this point will not considered conclusive is considered a very good indicator of your status. Most people that are infected will test positive by 6 weeks, so a 10 week negative is almost as good as gold.
