Constantly worried
      #7625 - 07/25/00 09:22 PM

I am constantly worried about having HIV. I am too chicken to take the test but I live in fear and can rarely sleep. I slept with someone who constantly lied to me and was unfaithful. I have noticed swollen glands (lymph nodes) in my neck recently and I haven't been feeling so hot lately. I know I should take the test...I wish I had some courage. I'm so desperately afraid of how my life will change if I test positive. There is no one I can count on to be in my corner. I wouldn't want pity...just support.

I think you have to make a decision about whether or not you want to get rid of these horrible feelings you are having right now. I've noticed that most people are afraid to take the test initially, but eventually they realize that it's something that should be done. It works out better in the end. I'm sure you've heard this before, but if you test negative, you can get rid of these fears once and for all. And if you happen to test positive (which I hope is not the case), you're definitely better off knowing, so you can take care of yourself, and so you can prevent infecting others.

Support is going to be there for you if you test positive. You may have to look for it, but it is available through many groups and other people who are affected by this virus.

It's obviously not going to be easy, but I think you'll be able to make it through this.

I totally understand the fear. Whatever you do DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SYMPTOMS. DO NOT TRY TO MATCH THEM UP. I am negative but had myself convinced that I had all of the symptoms which created stress and anxiety which in turn caused more symptoms. Don't put yourself through it.

Go take the test. It is a scary thing to think about, but it is not all that bad. There will come a time that thinking that you're sick is far worse than actually being sick. At that point you will get tested. Hopefully it will be soon.

As for support, I have found it on this board. You will run into many people who are going through exactly the same thing you are. Good luck. You'll be okay.

Hey there..I know what you're going through! I'm in the same boat myself, although many others on this board don't feel I need to be tested...I wish I had someone who could go with me to take the test, but it's not really like asking someone to go out to dinner...I guess I'll have to live in "fear" for a little while longer.
