Am I a case study?
      #75190 - 10/13/03 08:49 PM

Tested Elisa HIV-1 out to 1 year - all negative.
Have an autoimmune condition (crohn's)
Still feel real tired, have night sweats, pain & tenderness in right side neck, slight persistent cough. Yes I have been skitish, depressed and convinced I had HIV earlier in the year, along with a host of symptoms that were very real, but may have been stress and crohn's induced.

I am really trying to think positively and it seems to help, but I feel some darkness return. Anyway, I may have one more test, this time a PCR - if that was negative, I think I could seriously put this behind me.

If after I can do this I still feel tired, etc - I will take more steps to 1) see a counselor, 2) take tests for other items - (cancer, TB, Thyroid condition) for it seems that the symptoms I have found also indicate that it could be one of these other illnesses as well.

My question:
Would my autoimmune disease and maybe not producing enough antibodies cause negatives this long or a seroconversion after 1 year?

First of all, you're not an idiot. HIV is a very scary thing, but you are worrying for no reason. Your negative result out to one year is most definitely conclusive. HIV is not your problem. You said what the problem was yourself, Crohn's. The PCR test is a waste of money, the ELISA is the most accurate and conclusive.

I think your best bet would be to see a counselor. I know that it helped me with my irrational HIV fears. If you know that you have Crohn's, why would you test for other things as well? Does your doctor feel this is necessary?

Life is meant for living, not fearing.
