Need clarification on lymphocytes
      #73764 - 10/04/03 02:36 PM

Tested non-reactive a year and half after an exposure where I thought tattoo artist put bllod in ink(crazy, huh??) I need just some help with understanding lymphocytes, please look below.

clarification if you can. I was reading an article that said "in 1993 the definition was expanded to include HIV-infected adults and adolescents with CD4+T-lymphocytes counts of less than 200 cell per cubic millimeter, or less than 14 percent of total lymphocytes".

The basic CBC that I had done that indicates Total Lymphocytes, % as 13.7 in a reference range of 15-49 % is something totally different then the above statement, does the above statement mean CD4+ total lymphocytes?? This is where I'm getting worried/confused?

Thanks for the clarification, Josh

Lymph % from routine CBC is called total lymphocytes % which is NOT CD4+ lymphocytes. CD4 lymphocytes is a subset of the total lymphocytes. You would need a specific test for CD4+. Make sense?
