How long do I have to wait?

Does anyone out there know how long it takes to get back lab results? I took a blood test, including hiv test, with a private doctor more than 2 weeks ago (18 days to be exact)and I still have not received any word. The doctor said he would call if anything was wrong. I'm kind of hopeful that no news is good news but I'm also still anxious and could get bad news because the lab is so busy and it just took them so long to get the results to the doctor. Would someone please respond and tell me if it took them this long to get results or tell me what is the lab testing procedure. For the love of god I'm dying of anxiety and fear because it is taking so long.

Well, I'm not sure exactly what their procedures are but usually it takes about 1 week to get results back. It depends, however, on where you get it taken and whether or not your doctor wrote a lil mark meaning.. HURRY THIS IS URGENT! If it was an urgent one, it should be back in like 3 days. Then again, in some places, if there is no urgency mark, it may take up to 3 weeks!!! That was what my doctor originally told me before she realized how anxious I was and wrote "STAT". This is how it works in Ontario at least.

I can also only speak about Ontario. Over here, results generally take somewhere between a week and two weeks.
The reason it takes variable amounts of time is because the samples are tested in batches. If you happen to get your sample in at the end of batch, you could get your results within a few days. If it happens to be the beginning of a batch, it may take a while.
Don't worry about the length of time it takes to get your test results back. The vast majority of the delay is due to the process that is implemented at the lab. Your results won't affect it.

Just call your doctor if you are worried and ask for the results. A week is usually the norm in the US. By 18 days he is sure to have the results. And if he didn't call, it probably means the results are negative.
