Are Rapid Tests accurate?
      #69493 - 08/18/03 09:32 PM

I performed unprotected oral sex on a Pre-op transexual (shemale) escort three months ago. She did not cum in my mouth. I have very bad gingivitis, bleeding gums etc.

After an unbearable three month waiting period, I went ahead and got tested using Oraquick. It was a rapid test and gave me a non-reactive(negative) result in about 20 minutes.

Can I Woo-Hoo based on this result? The test took a single drop of whole blood from my index finger and produced this result. Is this test accurate? Would you recommend me re-testing with a conventional ELISA (results in two weeks)?

Can Oraquick detect all subtypes (especially Non-B) of HIV-1? Should I be concerned about it at all?

Thanks a bunch!

Yes, you can Woo-Hoo until you can't Woo-Hoo anymore. You're negative, congratulations! The OraQuick Rapid Test is 99.6% accurate on positive results and require an additional confirmatory test, the Western Blot. If your result were positve, you would have had a .4% chance that it wasn't related to HIV. The rapid test is 100% accurate for negative results if you were past the 3 month window (which you were).

Now, sit back and relax. Your unbearable time is over!

Take care friend.
