Low blood count
      #68527 - 08/01/03 06:57 AM

Hi I'm a woman in her mid 20's.My situation is this. I had possible exposure about 4 mths ago with a guy. I do not know of his status. I visited the doctor for a check up as I was my I beleive my pressure was high, indeed it was. He did a CBC and told me that my blood count was low, said he could not see how that is so as I am not anemic. If they did a CBC, would they not have had some indication that I something else was wrong, like I may have been HIV+? Does it work that way or is a CBC just a CBC and not to dertermine or detect HIV? I never had any flu/cold like symptoms, the only thing I remember having was a rash under my arms. Anything posted will give me some knowledge and awareness of what I should do.

Thanks
Simplicity

Why don't go and test for hiv ? - that would be easier than relying on a CBC and you will know for sure, as you are out of the normal window period. I do not know where you live, but I am pretty sure that there are places where you can be tested anonymously if you wish so.

Was it your red blood cells or white? Anemia is affected by the red blood cells being low, not the white. HIV affects the white blood cells. A CBC only gives a general picture of your blood, it does not go into specifics.

The only way to know for sure if you have HIV is to get an HIV test. Your doctor could do one, there are clinics, or you could even test privately with the Home Access test. You are past the three month mark so your results would be accurate.

What was the exposure you had four months ago?

My exposure was short, the condom came off then he used a next one. It was only a few seconds. My doctor did not actually say if it was white or red cells. I would assume if he said to me "you have a low blood count, but I can't understand why, you're not anemic" he meant about red cells. But I should not assume! I have to see him on Monday so I will enquire. I'm from South America and I don't believe they are home tests available here. Rumors spread like crazy here in the capital city so am scared to even ask him about HIV. I am a high profile person in my country so this makes it even harder.(sigh)

Why don't you try Home access ? It is confidential, arriving in an anonymous box and highly reliable. That would help cut all the rumors.

I'll see how best I can go about doing it. Will check the pharmacies and enquire if they do carry it. Either way I will have to get tested. Just hopw that I can shout one of those whoopies/yahooooooo afterwards.

If your pharmacy doesn't carry it, go to homeaccess.com and you can order it online.

Don't worry too much. Your potential exposure sounds very brief. The fact that he put on a new condom is a good thing!
