Hetero Males - Read this it may help
      #6645 - 07/05/00 03:28 PM

I posted this to the John's Hopkins Board the other day.................Heterosexual Transmission of HIV for males is misleading...most Hetero males get it from man to man sex or IV drug use read below..hope this helps. The number of male hetero cases is small, even smaller when you take this into account.

Dr Gallant

I had a question about something that has been confusing me, and probably a lot of
others for some time now. You probably don't have the answer, but your insight
would be helpful. Over the last 10 years or so, there has been a very noticeable
steady increase in women who have acquired HIV through heterosexual contact.
However, for men, HIV through heterosexual contact has stayed stable. What's the
deal? Does this mean that a large amount of these women are getting it from iv drug
users or bisexual men?

What is the trend in your clinic, do you find that most hetero cases you see are men
and women. I know men can and do catch HIV through hetero contact, but they
seem to be on the lower end of risk, right above lesbians (but yet they are the most
panicky about HIV). Any insight would be helpful

-Thanks
Bill

Bill,
In our clinic, and in the country as a whole, most heterosexual men with HIV
infection became infected either through sex with other men or through injection drug
use. Most women with HIV infection are infected either through injection drug use or
through heterosexual contact (with men who have one of the risk factors I just
mentioned). In the United States and other developed countries, heterosexual sex is
much more effecient at transmitting HIV from male to female than from female to
male. You'll find more about this issue archived in the "Epidemiolgy" section.

You're right that lesbians are at the lowest risk. But if this Web site is any indication,
they are not the "most panicky" about HIV infection. Wimpy straight men have them
beat on that score hands down. In fact, I can't remember the last time I received a
"worried well" question from a "panicky" lesbian.
