HIV statistics
      #64771 - 05/08/03 01:08 PM

Hello,

How the numbers compiled for HIV stats worldwide etc. Or more to the point how do they know how it was caught, i.e hetro sex, gay sex, drug use etc Do they rely on the persons hoensty for this? For examle a hetro guy could go with men but not admit to it. Also, why is it more commo for a hetro guy to catch HIV in Africa more than any other country, it seems to be transmitted more easily woman to man there than in the states or the uk for examle.

Any info would be greatly received.

I read an article in this month's Discover citing research that the higher heterosexual transmission in Africa is cofounded by unscreened blood. So they estimate the heterosexual transmission is around 30%. They also suggest that the presence of other STD's causes more suceptibility to HIV.

I also read an article in some sort of magazine for HIV+ people describing what they called a lower number of female to male cases then suggested by the statistics for simply that reason - men don't want to admit they are having homosexual affairs or IVD.

That being said, heterosexual women are still highly at risk.

Sorry don't have all the facts handy but check out PubMed if you want reliable articles
