Hi,
I just took my first HIV test ever. I have had unprotected sex several times but I have had no sex for the past 4months.
I wanted to make sure I waited the correct amount of time so that I can start my new sex life, free of HIV thoughts and fears.
My doctor sent me to Quest Labs to get the blood drawn and he told me to call him at the end of next week for the results.
I was only tested for HIV1. Should have been tested for HIV2 also? Did I make a mistake by not asking for both tests or will the HIV1 test also pick up HIV2?
I have no idea what generation of tests Quest Labs uses - should I go back and get a HIV2 test or just forget about HIV2?
I am scared enough as it is - another fear I dont need.
Exactly what is HIV2 and how would I get it? I also tested for all other std's.
Thanks for your help and I will write back when I get my test results.

HIV 2 is a second strain of HIV that is found in West Africa. HIV1 tests will pick up the HIV2 strain most of the time. If you live in the US it isn't a big deal anyway. There are only a handful of cases in the US and unless your exposure was in West Africa or with someone from West Africa it isn't consider a real threat.
