I hope that you all don't think I am stupid for asking this. My brother was recently in a very serious car accident. He had to get a blood transfusion. My question is this. I know that the blood was donated but we don't know by who. What if that person was HIV infected but within the window period when they donated blood? I mean what if they were infected amonth ortwo months earlier? How can the blood bank be sure that the blood is not tainted if you have to wait three months before being tested? I am worried about my brother.

The Red Cross uses a test called NAT to test blood. From my understanding it can pick up an infection in a matter of days. I'm not sure why it isn't used as a screening test. It may be too expensive to be feasible or prone to a high rate of false postives.
Since you don't hear a lot about tainted batches of blood or congressional hearings on our blood supply I think it's pretty safe to assume that what they are doing works. I'm sure you can find more information on their testing procedures on their web site.
