Q for HIV+ people about swollen lymph nodes
I would like to know if when you have swollen glands in the neck are they sore or painless?
I just took the plunge and took my 2nd HIV test…I am awaiting my results, which should be ready, this fri-sat.
I am tremendously nervous about some symptoms that I have had in the last year and a half, this and having unprotected sex is what made me get tested this week. My first test (negative) was nerve wrecking enough but this time I have this gut feeling I am going to be positive. Why I think it will be positive is because in my 30 years I have never had any of the following problems until this last year and a half.
My symptoms: After being a fool and sleeping with a woman numerous times with no protection after my first test was negative.
1: Just days after sleeping with this girl I came down with a horrible fever that left me unable to get out of bed for a week with heavy sweating, nausea and tonsillitis (or strep throat) *I have never suffered from tonsillitis or strep throat in my entire life* I never went to the doctor for an evaluation but took Penicillin and starting feeling much better the next day. The day before I got sick I had been working very hard with little sleep that week, got way to drunk, puked and passed out in my friends lawn that lives on a lake. I wrote this incident off as being sick from running myself down with no sleep/hard work and alcohol, I also thought sleeping in a yard with duck and geese droppings might have not been a great idea.
2: Six months later I got tonsillitis/strep throat again for the second time in my life…no doctor visit, took Penicillin and again started feeling much better.
3: Shortly after my tonsillitis I had an outbreak of follicutilis on my left wrist that took more than 6 months to clear with the use of antibiotic cream, in all I had the rash for about a year. Once again another symptom I have never had in my 30 years.
4: Last summer I had seborrheic dermatitis around the folds of my nose. Mind you I live in Michigan where it is very hot/humid during the summer. I am under the impression this is common only during cold dry seasons. *Yet another skin problem I have never faced in my 30 years*
5: Developed soreness in my armpits that lasted 3-4 months. The soreness is kind of hard to explain but my armpits only seemed to be sore when my arms were close to my body and the pain would go away at night, I would wake up from sleeping and have no soreness until about an hour later, some days I wouldn’t feel any pain or sometimes it was more severe???????? I wrote this off as pulling my muscles from carrying very heavy (50-70 lbs) cartons in a very awkward position down my basement stairs but after the pain kept coming back for 3-4 months I thought differently. * Once again I never had any on going pains in my armpits in my life*
6: About 3 months ago I noticed small scratch like red blemishes under my skin on my upper thigh. The blemishes are not raised but appear to be under the skin and change in color from dark red to light red. I haven’t put any creams or anything on them because I wanted to see if they would go away themselves, I also thought maybe my 90 pound puppy my have made the spots from jumping on me but after seeing that they haven’t gone away for 3 months leads me to think the mark(s) are something related to being HIV positive.
7: I have gained like 50 lbs in the past year and can’t tell if I have swollen nodes in the lower portion of my neck or just a fat neck. If I turn my neck a certain way the lumps (about 1 inch wide 2-3 long) are easily seen in the fold of my lower neck, they also feel hard on both sides of my neck in the exact same spot. If I turn my neck in another way the lumps disappear.
8: For about a month I have felt like I have water in my right ear, my ear is not soar or itchy just feels like I have water stuck in my ear that won’t readily come out with q-tips. I noticed the water type feeling when coughing or yawning also if I pull on my lobe I can hear the water mushing around. I have read in a few places that this was common among HIV individuals. * Once again I have in 30 years never had any ear troubles that I can recall*
All these symptoms I have all have been within a year and a half window…I would love to think this is all coincidence but have this gut feeling there is an underlying problem. Please say your prayers for my test results and me this Saturday. My live is going to change drastically one way or another this Saturday I hope and pray it will be for the better.
TIA

Ok so if everyone tests positive for AIDS then why did I have a negative test 2 years ago after being highly sexually active for more than 17 years with no protection and roughly 50-60 different partners?????????
Thanks for your meaningless stats and quotes during a time in my life that I would like to drive a car off a cliff…very compassionate.

I feel a need to edit my first post about when I thought I had ARS and how long after exposure…I had unprotected sex with her about 3 weeks before ARS symptoms and had protected sex with a different female about a month or so before. Sorry for the wrong info my brain is in shambles rite now awaiting my results, the closer I get to Saturday the more flustered I get.

So many 'symptoms'! I don't see the connection between them and HIV though. Most of what you say is wrong with you is more a matter of you being hyper-vigilant.
Strep throat is caused by a bacterial infection - strep. It's very contagious and can be passed around easily. It's common and even if you never had it before, it's not a big thing that you finally got a case of it and possibly a second.
Take those red dots. Lots of people have them from time to time, but don't really pay any attention to them.
Your lymph nodes. I don't pay any attention to mine and they don't bother me. I don't stand around turning my head to see what happens to them when I do. I don't poke them. I don't check them 10 times a day.
And my personal favorite...
"For about a month I have felt like I have water in my right ear, my ear is not soar or itchy just feels like I have water stuck in my ear that won’t readily come out with q-tips. I must have missed the boat. I always thought this was due to an excess build up of wax in the ear. I always thought that's why they have all those ear flush systems in the drug store. I didn't know those were just for people with HIV. I guess I better run out and get my 15 year old checked. She's had a problem like that since she was little.
All sarcasm aside. Truthfully you can't tell if you are positive by symptoms. If you look for health problems you will find them.

Ok admitted I probably have checked my nodes 30 times today but can you blame a brother who is awaiting his results…I’m going crazy. My nodes do look swollen; of course I am no doctor and have not been to see one so I can’t say for sure.
So…is it common to have two swollen nodes on both sides of my neck in the same places (one of which seems larger) that are not tender?
All my problems have been isolated over one year and a half; it just seems too scary that I have never experienced any of these problems before until after my risky behaviors.
It’s ironic that I may get my results on Valentines Day and am single at the moment. My greatest fear is I will never find a woman to love me again if I am infected and will die a lonely sick man.
I thank you for your response Jackie, I have read a lot of your posts over the past couple of years and get the feeling you are a very strong person who has a big heart. You put a smile on my face but I am still scared shitless.

Now you are going to start a panic about people in labs. This guy doesn't work in a lab. He probably doesn't even work.

Just got my results this evening and test results showed negative for HIV-1. I am ™.9 sure of the results and will count my blessings. I will also make a point of not surfing any more HIV web sites including this one, as everyone knows the mind can play dirty little nasty tricks on you…if you let it.
Good luck to everyone and goodbye!

Yeah, it's pretty easy to be right on this board since no one has ever tested positive that posted here. Could be because the exposures here are non and low risk. I notice you don't spend a lot of time trying to convince those of us that have tested postive, seeing our doctors, getting viral loads and CD4 counts that the tests are wrong. Could it be because you know it would look really foolish trying to convince people that actually live with HIV that it doesn't exist?

No it isn't common.
I told you, I don't even pay attention to my lymph nodes. Besides, when the lymph nodes swell during intial infection it is ALL of them. That includes the ones in the neck, under the arms, groin, etc. Not just two. That would indicate a localized infection which HIV is not.

I am now at 15 weeks, tested negative at 14 weeks (p24/antibody). I have swallen nodes in the neck, both sides, behind the ear, in groin. Lymph nodes in neck are growing now. Can it be HIV?

Any test after 12 weeks is considered conclusive. So.....How can it possibly have anything to do with HIV when you are HIV- ?

But why doctors recommend to retest at 6 months?

Which doctors? Certainly not HIV specialist. Since the CDC revised the testing guidelines in Nov of 01? or 00 The only time a 6 month may be recommended is when a person has had a high risk exposure to a person KNOWN to be HIV+ and the persons DOCTOR, not the person, feels the need to test at 6 months. To date, I haven't heard of any cases where any of these proved to be positive, if they tested negative at 3 months. If you want to sweat out another 3 months be my guest.

I’m not second guessing my Home Access results…in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if my symptoms gradually disappear all on there own. It’s time for me to start living my life again; I have been so hung up on my HIV status for months that I have forgot how to live.
Thanks for your help and best wishes!
