Life expectancy, cont.
      #5780 - 06/16/00 02:30 AM

Do yall agree that HIV is becoming more and more a treatable disease like diabetes, where the majority of people who come down with the virus, while never being cured, will be able to be treated to where the virus is contained and never develops into AIDS, thus living to a ripe old age?

Probably a while until that's the case. The people in the UK who had been halted in their disease progression are now starting to get ill and die, there is was increase in the number of AIDS deaths last year.

Plus, as more people are being infected, the number of people on treatment is going to rise, and the treatments are very expensive. Also, many of the current drugs have significant side effects, which can make them very hard to tolerate. They often cause serious complications such as liver toxicity. People with pre-existing liver problems are in an even worse situation.

Resistance is a major worry. In some people's case, they have been infected by someone who has been on treatment and their virus is already resistant to the drugs. Only development of new drugs, such as fusion inhibitors (e.g. T-20, also known as pentafuside) can fight this.

Even if you can achieve long-term suppression of viral replication, the virus still hides in certain cells in the body, so a cure is certainly out of the question with current treatments. But that is not what you asked about.

There is hope for the future, but there's a long way to go before HIV becomes just another manageable chronic condition.
