What is the concensus on this board on the average life expectancy of someone who is newly diagnosed with HIV?

I believe that this varies depending on who you ask. I do know that if one were diagnosed now, as opposed to 10 years ago, chances and life expectancy are much better.
from what I have read, the average is from five to 12 years from initail infection to full blown aids, without any treatment. Current effective treatments have not been around that long yet, (the disease is still relatively young) so this has not been figured into the average.
New treatments are being worked on every day, and alot of people are doing well and living normal lives. This is a fact in which I take comfort, maybe this is not a death sentence. Current treatments for one who is infected will certainly buy alot of time, and while I dont believe thier will ever be a cure for this disease (they have never been able to cure a virus of any type, just control it) I do believe that this will become a managable disease within the next couple of years.
A note to people who are worried about testing positive and are in the window period, this is just what I have done, but maybe it will help. I have gone off the idea that I will test positive. What I do in the time until I test is prepare my body for the fight of its life. I eat well, I run, I lift weights, I learn all I can. This takes up all of the extra time that I used to sit around and worry. If I test positive, I am so much more ready for the fight. If I test negative (which I hope I will, It was a low risk encounter) what have I lost? Nothing, I have come out of this a better person in more ways than one.
Just my philosophy.

thanks so much for a thoughtful, constructive, encouraging post. your kind of caring information is the reason i am still looking at this board. we all need to focus on the positive, and IGNORE things that aren't constructive. thank you, and good luck to all of you. i'm going to the gym, thanks eddie.

All of the idea trading on this site is great. I am going through my worry period too. Eddies E-Mail is truly inspirational.
