1 in 200 chance, cont.

I got that information off a web site that had an article from an HIV specialist. I agree that it varies from person to person, but what i was trying to get across was that even if the sex is unprotected the risk is very small. As for condom usage i believe the consensus is that if used properly, there is 0 risk of HIV infection, or as one post said the same liklihood of being struck by lightning

That's true. HIV is not as easy to catch as some other communicable diseases. And a condom really is great protection. If it doesn't break, you'll be ok.

I had an accident having sex with an HIV positive woman during her period. She told me later that she was positive, so I could get the PEP treatment. The doctors tell me that the chances of getting infected are slim, but the fact that there is a chance of getting it is worrying me sick. The woman told me her viral count or something couldn't be measured. Does that affect my chances of not getting infected? I am really scared, help!

Was the sex protected or unprotected? The viral count involves how much of the virus was in her body, i.e. fluids, with a higher count making it more contagious. Read the posts on 1 in 200 risk. Unprotected one time exposure is a very slim chance, in the single percentages, while protected would be no risk.

We have had sex 3-4 times, and allways used a condom. She insisted on this. The last time the condom burst, and this
was her first day of the period. Full exposure!!! The day after she told me that she was HIV positive, and had been so
for the last 7 years. I totally broke down, of course. We rushed of to the hospital and I took a quick test, and started
the PEP treatment (Crixivan + Combivir). These drugs are supposed to inhibit the Virus to even get started. Another thing, why didn't she tell me
about this before? We already had sex a couple of times!! Any comment is welcome.
