Hep Coinfection? Gman?
      #52284 - 12/26/02 04:48 PM

I have a quick question I would love to get some knowledgeable people's help on. I had protected sex with a prostitute where the condom broke. I got really sick about three weeks later (bad night sweats and extreme fatigue and other symptoms!). I had elavated liver enzymes so my doc thought I might have hepatitis. He tested me for HIV, Hep A B and C and I came back negative on all of the at three weeks and Hiv at 90 days (he didnt do another Hep test). He also ran a DNA PCR because I told him I heard Hep can cause a delay in antibody production. I came out negative on the DNA as well... what a total relief!! Now I'm freaking out again for two reasons:
1) Does Hep cause the DNA test to be false?
2) The DNA test doesn't test for HIV2 and the girl I was with was from Tiland. So could I have HIV2 (I tested Elisa at 3 weeks and 90 days for it and both were negative)and the Hep is causing it to delay antibody production.

thanks in advance

I do not know where you heard that co infection with HepC delayed the production of antibodies, but in the last 2 years it has been found to be untrue. You produce antibodies for HIV as soon as it starts infecting you. If you actually did go through ARS your body would have them even if you were co infected, and furthermore the Elisa test picks up HIV1 and HIV2 and all subtypes. Trust your doctor and the tests you are negative.
Also one other thing is the assumption that because the person you slept with is a sex worker they must be infected. This assumption is not a true one. Just because the person takes your money for sex doesn’t mean they must be infected. It is like saying because you have short hair you must be Catholic, or because your complexion is red you must be a drunk. It also says that you trusted enough to sleep with the person, but after you were done with them you assumed they must be infected. How do you know they are not thinking the same about you and that maybe it was you who made them pos?
