Bizarre health problems
      #4912 - 06/05/00 11:58 AM

More than three years ago, I slept with a guy. We had safer sex. Within about two days, I got a bizarre flu-like illness including swollen nodes, dizziness, ringing in ears and balance problems. Within a few weeks I developed a pasty mouth with white tongue and shortness of breath. Over the years I have tested repeatedly for HIV (every six months or so) and everything has been negative, so I figured I was off the hook. But my symptoms have persisted the whole time, and I've felt terrible. At first I went to a series of doctors and specialists who could not account for my symptoms - some said I had allergies, some said I was feeling guilt over my sexual contact (not!). Finally, I quit going to doctors. Then, last week, I developed a scaly patch in my mouth that would not heal. My doctor said it was thrush. I am having trouble breathing and I'm sweating a lot (sweating as I sit here writing this). The doctor has ordered a CD4 count which I'll get next week, despite the fact that I tested HIV negative just two months ago. My question is, what the HECK is going on?? Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I know all about the window period and the statistics, but it puzzles me that I can't get a diagnosis and the path always seems to lead back to HIV, despite all the evidence to the contrary. HELP!!

RELAX new

Man, relax. You can have any kind of disease but hiv. Think of this, if you really had hiv you would be a star right now. The first reported case of being infected despite more than 3 years of testing negative! Besides, you should think over if that really is thrush. Are you on steroids? This could produce that. Anyway, take a look at hiv oral health forum and go to the pictures section. There you will find an explanation and difference between trush and coated tounge, too. Relax.

Let me tell you that I have had very similar symptoms despite testing negative twice in the past three months. Keep in mind two things: stress can be a very powerful motivator behind symptoms and secondly, there are thousands of nondescript, self-limiting viruses out there and you could have any of them.

Thanks for the encouragement. However, I definitely DO have thrush. The doctor diagnosed it, not me, and gave me Diflucan to clear it up (which seems to have worked). This may indeed be something other than HIV, but I'll be darned if I can figure out what. I've been to ten doctors and get no answers.

Steve,

I have been going through something quite similar over the last 2 years. I wish you luck and let us know how your Cd4 cells check out. After 2 years I test negative, cd4s are good, but cD8s are very low (just the opposite of HIV).
