Six Months/Three Months
      #4780 - 06/02/00 03:10 PM

The truth is that if you don't test beyond 3 months, then you are leaving a *significantly* higher risk than if you do. Many people can live with a 1-5% risk of HIV infection and move on. But there is no way that I can believe that a 3 month test is just as accurate as a 6 month test.

Why does the CDC say that a 3 month test is only 95% accurate if it really is more than that? Why would the American government be requiring additional tests? I think the truth is that we *know* from studies there have been people who've taken beyond 3 months to seroconvert. These have been *reputable* studies. If you don't test beyond 3 months, you are taking a false peace.

Do your homework. new
      #4784 - 06/02/00 05:02 PM

You should ask all the other organizations and health departments all over the world, why they say 3 months. You should ask the GMHC, you should ask the New York City Health Department, you should ask the Massachussets General Hospital, you should ask hundreds of hiv specialists all over the world, you should ask even some of the people of the CDC. See around you, get out of the CDC shell. Remember, when all the world was saying 6 months the CDC was telling people 1 year, then they switch back to 6 months when all the rest of the world says 3 months.
Besides, about the studies you have been talking about, go to see hivinsite.com. the q&a section. There it is that info about the 51 and 2 people lasting MORE THAN SIX MONTHS. First, one thing is a needle shot and another thing is sex. Just see the riskes. Then, you shouldnt then be celebrating at 6 months, cos in this study they say they last MORE, see, MORE than 6 months. So you should test at 7 or better then, 8 or 9 months. Still, MOST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD will tell you that at 3 months you can be more that 99% sure and that at 6 months maybe 99.9999999%, but NEVER 100%.
Besides, why would you think other respectable countries and even organizations and doctors in the USA will tell people to stop testing at 3 months? Is that they want to SPREAD THE DISEASE all over? I dont think buddy. Go do your homework.

No need to get in a tiff here. The truth is that the study you mention is a reliable study. I think people here have come to some false peace that 3 months is OK, when it is NOT, and when 5% of people needed more than 3 months to convert.

Also, there is no reason to believe that people with it injected into the bloodstream will take longer than people who receive it sexually. We deal with the same virus in either situation.

Mass General Hospital does not say that 3 months is conclusive. Nobody has ever said that at Mass General. As for the other organizations, they are probably trying to assuage people's fears, and betting that people will have exposures again between 3 and 6 months, so they tell themselves that 3 months is conclusive.

It is not. Six months is.

Then why dont you do something? new
      #4789 - 06/02/00 05:23 PM

With all the knowledge you know you should really do something. Im not really sure about the Mass Hospital but definitive at Harvard Medical School they will tell you 3 months is enough. But, hey, since you know this hard fact, as a u.s. citizen why dont you just SUIT all these people and organizations telling people to wait just 3 months. Dont you know they are making a criminal action spreading a disease? Com on. I think you havent done your homework yet!.

There IS peace found in a negative at 3 months tough guy. As you noted in the study 5% seroconverted beyond the 3 month window. Thus, 95% seroconverted within 3 months. I don't know about you or anyone else but I'll take those odds any day!!! Let's go to Vegas!!

Don't get me wrong.. a test at 3 months is not definitive (6 months negative ELISA is the gold standard) but it is rare to seroconvert beyond 3 months unless you have something else going on with your immune system.

OUT.
