all the information out there is so confusing and contradictory.
i tested positive recently (ELISA & WB), my boyfriend tested negative on ELISA. we still have another 2 1/2 months to go for his 3 month test. we're both freaking out about his possible infection - but now i keep reading that female to male transmission is not documented (?!!!) can this be true? anybody have some sources on this? or just dissident BS?
please help clear this up.
Thanks.

I'm not a pro on this subject at all. But from everything I've ever read, female to male transmission is less likely than male to female, male to male, etc. The risk is less, but female to male transmission is definitely possible and has happened. Just try to keep a cool head (easier said than done, I know) and wait to see what the tests say. Testing is the only way to know for sure. Best of luck to you and your b/f.

It is possible for female to male transmission. However, don't fall into the trap of getting tested and retested before the 3 month window is up. If you get a negative at three months, then wooo hooo! Until then, find other things to take your mind off of the "wait". Good luck!

The CDC did a study of heterosexual transmission. The results were anything but what they wanted and they published but did not distribute the report. The Wall Street Journal attacked them for doing this (breaking the law). Here was the headline extract -
"It takes a minimum of five million unprotected, heterosexual encounters with an HIV positive person for a non IV drug using HIV negative person to servoconvert* to HIV positive" - CDC Report.
* catch or 'be infected by'

"It takes a minimum of five million unprotected, heterosexual encounters with an HIV positive person for a non IV drug using HIV negative person to servoconvert* to HIV positive" - CDC Report.
This quote is totally bogus. The only source for this seems to be Paul King. Is he citing a Denialist letter to the Wall Street Journal?
For a start it displays an ignorance of mathematics. The risk of dying in an airplane crash can be stimated to be approximately 1 in a five million. This does not mean that you have to have had a minimum of five million airplane flights before you will ever die in a plane crash.
There have been several studies that have attempted to estimate the transmission risk for heterosexual contact.
This is inherently difficult largely because the transmission risk is influenced by a number of factors that may vary.

Most studies have shown a higher risk for male-to-female than female-to-male. In contrast, Gray et al did not find a significant difference in his Ugandan cohort. Gray et al found that transmission risk increased dramatically with viral load and also with increased with genital ulceration.
Padian also reported bleeding involved in the female-to-male transmission that she documented.

thanks everyone who responded. that condom article is pretty scary.
the *5 million heterosexual contacts* figure seems really strange. i definitely didn't have sex with the [censored] who infected me 5 million times! i hope nobody takes that seriously; it's downright dangerous to quote people a statistic like that!
i guess the reality is there's no way to know and we'll just keep on keepin' on for the next couple months.
thanks again folks! z

These boards are not monitored and untrue garbage such as that condom article gets posted and some people might believe it. There are some denialists, "aids is a myth" losers on this board-ignore them all.
Female to male transmission happens less frequently than male to female however it obviously does happen. Thats how some straight guys who have never used drugs have come down with HIV-they eventually caught it from a woman.
Hopefully your BF will continue to test negative and you 2 can have a normal sex life as long as condoms are used.
I hope you are under the care of a DR so you may monitor the virus.
Good luck to you both.
