one time insertive
      #4604 - 05/31/00 11:20 AM

What is the likelihood of getting infected as an unprotected insertive partner in anal sex with an HIV+ partner on a single incident, assuming you only had anal sex for less than a minute. Is there a high probability of the insertive getting infected?

You are going to find that the probability is less than 1% per encounter and all kind of stuff like you need to be exposed several times. Anyway, theres a fact, someone has an open sore, a cut or else then I think it just take one time and bad luck. The same goes about the fact in the virus can get into the urethra. There are lucky guys that have been exposed several times without getting infection, on the other side there are unlucky guys that just needed one time. Tough I say, that even that risk is high, the probability is much lower than if you were a woman (vaginal sex) or if you were the receptor.

So are you saying that its still pretty hard to get infected as an insertive partner (unprotected w/ HIV+ partner) if the stats say less that its a 1% per contact risk?

What I mean is that statiscally speaking that kind of exposure is not as common as another kind of exposure. But they say that all you need is to have a cut, an open sore, or to get into the uretra. What are the chances of that? Statiscally speaking not much but it could perfectly happen to a person in just one exposure.

I had this exact same encounter a few weeks ago (used a condom as insertive but the condom unknowingly had a hole,
partner was HIV+) I'm stressing out even though from what I hear, I think I was still in a safer position than had it been completely unprotected sex and if the sex was for a long duration. But my mind can't seem to rest and I feel at danger even though they say it takes more than one exposure
to get infected and all these variables (broken or bruised skin on penis, STD - none of which I have) have to be present.

Has anyone ever experienced this same sexual dilemma of broken condom with an HIV+ partner? I would just like to hear what people have to say about broken condoms.

Regards

Stressed Out

I don't want to scare you, but if you heard that it takes more than one exposure to get infected, you were seriously misinformed! Maybe someone told you that it is unlikely to get infected after one exposure. That is definitely true. But that's not the same thing as saying it doesn't happen with one exposure, because it can. As you said, there are a lot of factors involved here. Get tested. And keep in mind that you are most likely HIV negative. But you still need to get tested.

Re: one time insertive/stress/when to test? new

When would be the best time to test? Its only been 2 weeks since the possible exposure? I want to test via PCR soon...
will that be indicative of anything at 2-3 weeks?
Comments?
